What is a Clinical Safety Officer?

Clinical Safety Officer Requirements

DCB1060 and DCB1029 require organisations to have a suitably qualified and experienced Clinical Safety Officer. Compliance with DCB1060 and DCB1029 is mandatory under the Health and Social care Act 2012.

The NHS Digital Technology Assessment Criteria (DTAC) requires your organisation to have a named Clinical Safety Officer. Your organisation’s Clinical Safety Officer will need to be a registered healthcare professional that has undertaken appropriate Clinical Safety Officer training.

Your organisation may appoint an internal Clinical Safety Officer if it has someone that is suitably qualified or may choose to select an external outsourced Clinical Safety Officer through a managed CSO services provider.

Clinical Safety Officer Responsibilities

Best practice dictates that a Clinical Safety Officer should, as a minimum, be responsible for the following:

  • Advising on the safe design, deployment, and use of Health IT Systems.
  • Developing a Clinical Risk Management Plan.
  • Implementing a Clinical Risk Management System.
  • Overseeing Clinical Risk Management processes.
  • Conducting hazard assessments and maintaining a Hazard Log.
  • Producing Clinical Safety Case Reports.
  • Investigating and responding to clinical safety incidents.

Clinical Safety Officer Qualifications

Only qualified Clinical Safety Officers should be tasked with assessing and managing clinical risk in Health IT Systems.

To meet the requirements of the DCB1060 and DCB1029 standards, a Clinical Safety Officer must be a registered healthcare professional that has undertaken Clinical Safety Officer training.

The seriousness of a Clinical Safety Officer’s responsibilities is such that it is imperative that any Clinical Safety Officer training undertaken should be aligned with DCB1060 and DCB1029 best practices.
